Big, big day on Saturday. Geetle ran her first 5k! She had run the mile 2 weeks ago and liked it, so we signed her up for a 5k this weekend. Her training routine consisted of 2 practice runs (about a mile each) around the neighborhood, and I was a little concerned how she would do running 3.1 miles on Saturday. But, she was in an eager mood, very energetic and pumped.
BAGD ran the race too, but told her he was not running with her. He told her to just follow the pack and we’d be waiting for her at the finish line. I, of course, worried that she would get lost or something like that. But BAGD told me that was silly. I knew it was, but I still worried. And this particular race was a unique one in that it went past the same place in the park 3 times as the runners looped through the course. So, she would see me in the cheering section 3 times. I worried that when she ran past me the first or second time she might be crying or carrying on from the pain or something. And I worried that I might make a poor mothering-move and say “Its OK! You tried! Its OK to stop!” And thereby ruin this big moment for her by telling her it was Ok to quit.
As it turns out, when she ran past me the first time, it was only about 100 yards into the race and she was giddy with excitement. The second time she looped around it was just after 1.25 miles and she was still going strong. (see photo above). The next time I saw her, it was just before the finish line. BAGD had finished at 25:50 and went back to wait for her at the top of the hill near the finish line. She came over the hill at about 38 minutes. I knew it was her because I saw the pony tail wagging back and forth like a furry pendulum! BAGD got back in the race to run with her until the finish line.
BAGD has his eye on another 5k race for September 14th. He invited Geetle to run again too. This particular race offers a 1mile kids fun run as well.
Geetle said no, thanks. She’ll run the 5k.
