School starts tomorrow. Giggles prepared by taking a long bath, no bubbles. Geetle prepared by packing her backpack and laying out her first day of school outfit (puka shell necklace, Air Jordan T-shirt and cargo shorts). Pookie prepared by doing the same thing he does every night…sing a few karaoke songs before bed.
We’ve been prepping Giggles because she is starting kindergarten. So, we are hyping it up, while checking for apprehension or fear below the surface.
We have been working with Geetle a bit because her BFF has been assigned to another class and they won’t be together this year. We’re monitoring her for sadness and social anxiety.
In the midst of all this…tonite at bedtime in fact, we realize we sort of forgot to work with Pookie. Heehee.
We didn’t need to tell him school was starting. He keeps track of these things on his calendar. We didn’t need to tell him that 5th grade would be like. He doesn’t really care, he just goes to school because that is what kids do, according to him. He doesn’t ask questions. He doesn’t complain. He just goes to school when its time and does his Pookie-thing.
As I left his bedroom tonight I said “Good Night Pookie. Instant Sleep! See you in the morning. School tomorrow!”
BAGD was reading to Giggles and he stopped, shook his head and chuckled. He said “You know how much prep work a lot of parents have to do to transition their kid back to school? And we just go ‘good night. school tomorrow.’ Weird.”
I hadn’t thought about it, but it is weird. And maybe we take it for granted sometimes. For all of his Autism crap, Pookie does excel in some areas. School seems to be one of them, and who could ask for a better one.
