Stop the Presses! We have a new world record!

Day 5 of Kindergarten and Pookie has been sent home with a “Fundraising Packet.”

15 minutes later…another record…..That’s when I sent it back with a note saying that we choose not to participate. I am not against raising money for schools, I just don’t know that selling $8 gift wrap and $14 Peanut Butter Patties is the way to do it. I wrote a note telling the teacher that we preferred to donate to a specific classroom need, just let me know what it is.

I know that the Fundraisers are for the whole school and the PTO uses the money to buy playground equipment and stuff like that….but I gotta take a stand. Its Day 5 of Kindergarten. He is 5 1/2. He does not understand the concept and even if he did, he would not want to participate….Pookie is sort of anti-consumerism. He would not be selling the gift wrap…I would. And I got another kid in school across town. I ain’t selling her gift wrap either. Now, Geetle might actually like selling her own gift wrap, but instead I think we will talk about why the school wants her to sell gift wrap and instead see if there is a way she can get excited about another project. I support the No-Cook Nights where certain restaurants donate percentage of the nights receipts to the school. I support bake sales and book sales. But the gift wrap/peanut buter pattie/junk sales are pushing the line.

Sorry to all those family members that were planning to do their Christmas shopping out of the Kindergarten Fundraising Catalogs. I am sure there will be another opportunity. Just find some random kid between the ages of 5 and 12 and I am sure he/she will sell you something this Fall.

I’m just bummed that Geetle isn’t selling snickerdoodle cookie dough! That stuff was amazing!

Proud of you that you are taking a stand!

I like when the kids sell cookie dough, but $15 popcorn tins and $20 cheese balls not so much.
What annoys me so much is bake sales set up right outside the grocery store….I am going inside the store where I can buy the same thing for much much less.
Or the people that just set up shop and flat out ask you if you’d like to make a donation to their girls fastpitch softball team….no…no I would not.
I think some things work better if you just stick to people you actually know.

I’ve got three kids, the oldest in college, the two youngest in high school. I said “NO” to selling door-to-door for schools a long time ago. It just got out of control. I don’t mind sending in a donation or donating my time. But my kids aren’t going to door-to-door, and neither am I.
