What I did on my birthday

by beagoodmom on September 8, 2008

Some of you have asked, so I will break it down for you. Note that the kids slept at Aunt Shel’s the night before and BAGD snuck out at 6am to take Geetle to a football game. Pookie and Giggles went to a carnival with Aunt Shel and Uncle Mark. Me?

Woke up at 8am….the time is not so important. What is important is that I was the one who decided it was time for me to wake up. No one came into the room yelling “emergency! emergency! Pookie has his shirt on inside out!” or “Irving Mouse took Gonzo into his mouse house. That’s a dangerous business.” (a recent, wildly popular script of Pookie’s)

Got dressed. Ran the hairdryer on “HIGH”; no one told me its too loud on “HIGH”. Did not have to rush because someone was crying from their crib, missing me terribly eventhough I had employed a 5year old semi-professional vaudeville actor to entertain her.

Drove to Panera Bread for a bagel. Ratio of time required to get parked, out of the car and into the store to time spent eating bagel = 1:3. Much different than my usual ratio of 5:1, when I have my 3 junior assistants with me.

Stopped at 3 garage sales. Did not have to buy a $.25 stuffed cat for anyone who agreed to be dragged along and promised to be good, but then could not get her mind off the aforementioned stuffed cat and really really really wanted it.

Stopped at Meijer to buy a magazine, Diet Ginger Ale, Fritos and cheese dip. Did not have to stop and look at the poster of Hooper from PBS Kids or the fish tanks. Did not have to hide my Fritos. Saw that Cheerios were on sale. Did not buy any.

Came home. Ate Fritos, drank Ginger Ale, read magazine and watched I Love Lucy. Noticed several choking hazards on the living room floor. Left them there.

Sewed 3 little zippered wristlets. Spread my fabric, scissors and pins ALL over the room, knowing I would not be interrupted and would not have to tidy up for hours.

Sewed a new purse for myself.

Took myself out for ice cream. It was premium ice cream so it was still expensive, but it was roughly 1/4th of what it usually costs “me” to go out for ice cream.

Went to see Pineapple Express. No, its not about SpongeBob. Not at all.

Came home and redid the straps on my new purse.

All day, I went to the bathroom when I wanted to, not when I had just changed a diaper and had to wash my hands anyway. Not while I was in the nieghborhood of the bathroom and thought I should probably go now, in case I did not get the chance later.

Some of you might think that spending your birthday alone is sad. To you I say…..you don’t have any kids, do you? I enjoyed my day alone. I thought about my missing family, but I did not miss my missing family. I knew they would be right there again at 5:45 Sunday morning….and they were. Just where I left them. Just where I wanted them to be.

Sounds like a fab day. I don’t think spending your birthday alone is sad at all if you have 3 little groupies tagging along with you the other 364 days of the year. Happy belated birthday!
