Check out this video called “The Bee Dance” (don’t worry, its G-rated).
Go. Go click it and then come back.
Are you back? The public service message at the end sort of takes you by surprise, doesn’t it? I went to www.helpthehoneybees.com myself and clicked around. First of all, I like the chirping birds in the background. Nice ambient noises while you read the site. Second, that is really unfortunate, the poor bees are disappearing. Its not my top priority, but I am glad its someone’s. Bees are good for nature and all. I have other things to worry about today, but its still important that someone help the poor bees. Personally, I think we should all adopt one obscure cause. I have a few of my own.
1. I stand up for proper spelling and refuse to shop at places that purposely misspell words in their name. No Toys R Us. No Krispy Kremes. BAGD is also forbidden to use the “Cum and Go” gas stations which are, unfortunately, so prevalent to and from his Iowa Hawkeye football games. He can pee there, but he is not allowed to spend any money.
2. I support the re-use of magazines and force my old copies on anyone who will take them. Its like recycling, but better……its sharing knowledge too. (**pat on back**)
3. I am considering switching from the local Mom & Pop printer cartridge store (where I shop to give the little guy a chance against Office Depot) to getting my ink from www.lasermonks.com. These are monks….from Wisconsin…to sell ink cartridges, cell phones and homemade dog biscuits to support their Monastery. Last year they had something like a 500% operating surplus, which they donated to charity. Lesson here is, everyone needs a side gig to bring in extra money, even monks.
4. Every chance I get, I remind bottle-feeding new mothers that generic formula is not made from instant vanilla pudding mix and melamine in some alley behind a meth lab or in somewhere in China. Infant formula can only be sold in the US if its made by a gov’t licensed manufacturer. There are only 5 FDA licensed manufacturers in the USA…Abbott Labs (Similac), Nestle (Carnation), Mead Johnson (Enfamil) and PMB and Solus Products LLC (makes all the store brands, that aren’t actually made by one of the other 3 and just labeled differently under a private label agreement, and maybe some specialty fomulas, I think). Generic formula is cheaper, but its just as good.
So, today’s message is….pick a cause and live it. Luckily, all the big ones are taken. The Susan G Komen group seems to have the breast cancer thing covered…I see they are selling pink TicTacs and silicon spatulas now. Bono has got dibs on poverty, AIDS, and African nation debts. What will be your cause? Will you scribble out swearwords you see written on jungle gyms? Will you buy from every Lemonade Stand you see? Will you speak out for the medicinal uses of the purple coneflower?

My cause is a simple one…to make sure that every child in my classroom feels loved, honored, and respected.
Well, I won’t be scratching out any swear words on jungle gyms, because then I wouldn’t have any good reading material. Kidding! But a cause I DO believe strongly in is the new HPV vaccine. I have had 2 abnormal paps and a colposcopy in 07-08 and I can honestly say it was very frightening. I think this should be a mandatory vaccine for every young girl. The worst part is how many people think they are somehow “Immune” to this…no. If I have my numbers right, I believe somewhere around 75%-80% of the population has this virus. Scary numbers. I actually think I may write a blog of my experience now. I’ll check my numbers.
ok, so that video is hilarious! made me think of happy feet and how randomly it was a huge save the world, anti-pollution campaign cleverly disguised as a cute, dancing penguin movie.
i stumbled upon your blog probably last month. i absolutely love it! we don’t have kids yet, but i spend a good amount of time working with kids and am in my senior year of college (getting my degree in ABA, so those with autism have a special place in my life). i have finally read all the way through your blog to current and am starting to read beagooddad’s.
