One of my biggest goals in life is to make sure we are normal enough so that we never appear on Wife Swap, but I do admit that I like watching it. Tonite’s episode pitted an “unschooling” family against an overscheduled one. Oh, let the wackiness ensue!
Obviously, the point of the show is to find two polar opposite families and prove that they are both crazy, in their own way. The correct lifestyle lies somewhere in the middle. I think that is where the BeAGoodFamily lies. We make Pookie and Geetle do homework, even when the teacher does not assign any. But we do it as a fun way to do “projects” together each night. We limit their TV time, but we do not ban it; they get 2-4 hours a week, which is not extreme, in either direction. We limit treats, but they know their way around a McDonalds. You gotta find the happy place in the middle, for every part of your life.
What I find interesting about the show is that the message is pretty clear to everyone, except the families involved. Every person on the show seems to think they were picked because they are perfect family and can teach the other family something useful; to help them get on the right path. Yeah. No. You were picked because you are some kind of crazy. Not sure what kind, but you’ll definitely find it in the crazy aisle.
So, are we really not crazy enough to get on Wife Swap? I *think* I am not crazy enough, but maybe we are. There was a good 1/2 cup of food debris under the dining room table since yesterday’s lunch. Does that make me “crazy unclean woman?” I like to make my own cleaning liquids out of vinegar, baking soda and the like. Does that make me “crazy green clean freak woman?” I make Geetle walk home alone from the bus stop, does that make me “unfeeling lazy woman?” Or. because I watch her from the window every step, does that make me “crazy overprotective woman?”
I don’t know. Back to the original goal. Keep off of Wife Swap.

My goal is NEVER to be on any of the Clean House shows, no matter how much I would like all the new furniture and organizing tools.
