Geetle and her book adventures

by beagoodmom on February 26, 2009

Geetle was pretty excited when she got home today. 2 days ago, she had found a pamphlet in a Parenting Magazine which advertised a bunch of Junie B Jones books. She poured over the pamphlet, reading the titles. I told her she should get a Junie B Jones book next Tuesday when her class goes to the Library. She said “No Mom. We have to pick the ones on the tables. I can’t have Junie B Jones!” (Truly horrified that I would even bring it up) Meaning that the Librarian pre-selects books around a theme or reading level, before her class gets there.

I explained that the librarian was just trying to be helpful and would be happy to let her have a specific book. She was not so sure. Geetle always likes to follow the rules. All rules. Even those that are not rules, that she thinks are rules. Anyway, we sat down and wrote the librarian a note, asking if Geetle could borrow “Junie B. Jones is Not a Crook” by Barbara Parks. Geetle wrote the title herself, I wrote the rest. I knew that if we did not write it down, she would not ask on Tuesday, just in case Mom is crazy and it really is against the rules for Kindergarten to borrow any book they want. Geetle likes to play on the safe side. But we wrote the note and put it in her backpack for the teacher.

Yesterday, no response. Geetle said it was because “kindergarten is not allowed to go down the aisles.” But today….a copy of the book in her backpack, with her note folded neatly inside. Geetle is excited. She is reading it right now. Its pretty funny, apparently. She is laughing alot.

So, we learned a little lesson about asking for things that might not be against the rules. A little lesson about how to make a polite request. And she got to read a cool book too. Oh, and of course, we affirmed that Geetle is an awesome reader and very into her chapter books. Pretty good day. Pretty good Geetle.

Good for you for sticking up for her. Not to criticize the librarian, but I thoroughly hate it when they do that. I was reading chapter books too in Kindergarten, and our librarian wouldn’t let us just pick anything. So I would have to check out some picture book (don’t get me wrong, I love picture books, but I wanted a book to read for more than five minutes) and then my mom would take me to the public library after school so I could get whatever I wanted.
Oh well, I know she meant well, but I still don’t think it’s a good idea.

Just to be fair to the librarian, she never banned Geetle from the chapter books. Geetle never asked. It’s kind of like why she had to take fruit rollups to school for her birthday instead of cupcakes. Everybody else takes fruit rollups so she just kind of figured there was a rule that everybody HAD to bring fruit rollups even though we tried to tell her otherwise.

She’s silly like that.

Ah, I see. I was like that too, I was really into following the rules to a “t”. Who knows, maybe my old librarian would have let me if I had asked!
