Pookie lost his tooth!

by beagoodmom on March 18, 2009

As we were getting ready to take BAGD out to lunch for his birthday on Saturday, Pookie suddenly became very aware of his loose tooth. He began to wiggle it ALOT. He told us it was “melting” and asked us to “cut it off”. (like a hangnail, we assume). BAGD looked and poked and it was not quite ready yet. But, Pookie is often obsessed with things like this and went back to wiggling. Sure enough, as he sat on the bottom step, waiting for everyone else to get their shoes on, we heard a sharp “click” and saw his tooth had hit the hard wood floor below.

Pookie does not really understand things like loosing your teeth. Before it fell out, he asked us to fix it for him, several times, not understanding that we could not. Once it fell out, he was not scared, but he was not excited either. He has this attitude about unknown things…he sort of just says “Ok. Whatever.” and gets back to the more familiar parts of life. And so it was with his first loose tooth. In some ways, this is his best quality in life. He does tolerate the unknown, some kids with Autism do not. Even things he is truly scared of (like hair clippers and fire) he will tolerate and finds his own way to cope. He usually just covers his ears and quietly shrinks back, still watching everything.

He does not care that his tooth fell out. He does not really want to show you the hole. He is not excited about a “Tooth Fairy”. But, he is not afraid he is going to die either. He did not try to hide it, in case it was naughty. He did not try to put it back in. He just has great faith in life….faith that it will all be OK in the end. Even if he does not understand it. Faith that the hair clippers will not hurt him, even though they are horribly noisy and tickle alot. Faith that if everyone else is singing “Happy Birthday” it must be OK that the cake is on fire. Faith that his tooth is all right, even if it is in a baggie on the kitchen counter instead of in his mouth with all the other ones.
