He came back!

We are working on some life skills with Pookie. Well, we are always doimg that, I guess. But we have a few priority ones, ones that play heavily into school skills. One is getting him to go to the bathroom alone in a public place AND return to the starting point AND do so in a timely manner. Its a tall order. He is good at going. He will always come back (we think) but his timing is very slow.

The other night, we practiced at a restaurant. He, Geetle and I got up to go to the bathroom. Geetle and I went into the women’s. He started to follow us but I told him to use the boys room and then go back to the table by Dad when he was done. I made Geetle hurry, so she and I would not be too much later than he was. When we got back to the table, it was just BAGD and Giggles there. I guess it takes 1 6 year old boy longer to pee than 2 girls. So, we waited for a minute or so. Geetle started to get nervous (seriously. she worries about him). I said we would give him to the count of 30. At about 14 or 15….there came his head bobbing along the aisleway. He did get turned around a bit and started heading for the wrong corner of the restaurant, but we waved to him and he came right over. I think he was really lost, not just wandering for the sake of wandering. So, we call that a victory.

At school, he can be trusted to go to the bathroom alone, but the teacher often has to go get him because he is making faces in the mirror or playing in the sink. They work on it at school too. The boy is just not in a hurry, thats what it boils down to. Why hurry? School will be there waiting. Mom and Dad will be there waiting. No reason to hurry. But he is learning that it is expected.

But I am so excited!!!! He came back!!!!!!
