The Ups and Downs of Parenthood

by beagoodmom on May 4, 2009

Had some ups and downs today:

Up- Geetle seeing a delivery truck with the name of an Italian foods wholesaler on the side and asking “is that the spaghetti company Dad works for?” No, he is working for another Italian-sounding name right now. But Kudos to her for being able to read an Italian-sounding company name on the side of a truck.

Down- Pookie spilling his milk at breakfast this morning. I had hoped we were over that.

Up- Giggles walking the entire way around the block tonite, her first time. She stopped to sit on 2 man-hole covers and touch 3 trees and 2 tulips, but other than that she kept a pretty good pace.

Down- Finding out that my “human” was not really a human after all, and having her yell at me for calling back to check on the status of the situation.

Up- seeing Pookie and BAGD come up with this entry for the class cookbook at school:

How to Make Spaghetti:
1) put the spaghetti on plat

2) add soce

3) adspriclcheese

4) adbuter

5) eatitup

6) wah yourhands

dictated and typed by Pookie himself.

Down- Agreeing to a proposition Geetle made me, and then having to backpedal once I thought more about it. Sorry Geet.

Up- knowing I could trust Pookie and Geetle to play in the front yard alone after school.

Down- having a conversation with Geetle in which is was obvious that she was trying to trick me into something she was unwilling to ask about outright.

Up- having Geetle decide she could just ask me, eventhough it was sort of an embarrassing question and she was a little afraid she might get in trouble. (FYI- I can’t tell you what it was, but you would be embarrased if it happened to you too, and NO, your mom would not have yelled at you either. Stuff happens.)

Down- spending over an hour on the phone regarding my “human” problem, missing alot of the key afterschool kid-interaction time.

Up- Watching Giggles eat asparagus, salmon and strawberries for dinner, using her little green plastic fork and daintily dipping things in ketchup, pinky extended.

Down- watching Pookie and Geetle eat just salmon for dinner.

Up- laughing at Giggles when, during our walk, she caught up with BAGD and the big kids, only to have them speed away again. Laughing harder when she stopped, bent over and tapped the sidewalk, to show where they should have waited for her.

Down- Having to enforce our “you know the routine” rule on Pookie tonite, causing him to miss stories and us leave the bedroom before he even got his pajamas on. But, he knows the routine and he was lollygagging on purpose.

Up- checking on him a few minutes after “lights-out” and finding that he eventually buckled down, got his pajamas on and got into bed with his own books to read.

Down- wrestling with Giggles and her toothbrush this morning.

Up- peacefully brushing Giggles’ teeth tonite before bed.

Up- showing Giggles the pocket in her shirt today, helping her find things to stuff in there.

Up- Having Giggles hug my knees a dozen times since lunch.

Up- watching Geetle work on her Young Authors book for school, personally written and illustrated.

Up- asking Pookie where he left his backpack afterschool and having him tell me point-blank, quickly, correctly and with no echolalia.

That’s a lot of ups and downs. No wonder my head hurts right now.
