Teacher Appreciation Gift- from Geetle

by beagoodmom on May 7, 2009

Early this week, I asked Geetle if she wanted to make a Teacher Appreciation gift for her Kindergarten teacher. She said yes, but had no idea what to make. I wanted to go to Jo-Ann’s anyway, so we settled on a little quilt, sewn by Geetle herself. We thought she could use it to illustrate “Q is for Quilt” or put it in the make-believe center. Geetle chose 2 Fat Quarters on Monday. We did not get around to working on it until tonite, Thursday. Luckily, this method is pretty quick and simple.

Materials:

2 Fat Quarters
A piece of flannel, Minky or cotton for the back, probably 24 inches x 24 inches.
Cutting Mat
Rotary Cutter
Ruler
Thread
Sewing machine

Start by cutting your Fat Quarters into strips 3 inches wide, the long way.
Sew 2 strips together, right sides facing.
Continue adding strips to the side, one after another. Its ok if they are a bit wonky *(or sewn by a 6 year old!)
When all strips are sewn togehter, Iron nicely, all seams pointing one direction.
Take the quilt top to your cutting mat and square the entire thing off, any size you like.
Cut a piece of backing a bit larger than your quilted top.
Sew the backing to the quilt top, right sides together. Leave a 3 inch gap on one side for turning inside out.
Cut away the excess around the edge of the quilt.
Turn inside out.
Edge stitch around the entire quilt, carefully sewing up the opening.
If you like, or your 6 year old assistant likes, find some fun stitches on your sewing machine and sew a line from one side of the quilt to the other. Geetle chose a vine stitch, a zig zag, a heart beat and a loopy design.

All done!

Check out Geetle’s finished quilt. She did all the sewing, except attaching the front to the back and the edge stitching. All in about 45 minutes. Its a good size for a doll, making this a great project for an elementary schhol aged girl to make with little help. Sewing the strips together is pretty easy and very forgiving. If your lines are not straight, you just square the finished product off and its fine. With no right angles where the strips meet, its a good project for a beginner.

For packaging, we put the finished quilt in a lunch bag. Geetle made a card which we attached to the bag with a pipe cleaner and a hole punch.

I tried to get Pookie to come make something, but he refused. Usually he would love the chance to play on my sewing machine, but I think he was put off by the fact that Geetle was still buzzing around. I am feeling a little bad that I do not have anything for Pookie’s teacher, but then again, I have chaperoned 6 out 8 monthly field trips (and sent a proxy on the other 2), I come to help with Centers every other Monday, and I send in dry erase markers, baby wipes and dry cereal about once a month. I think I’m good. Unless my guilt gets to me before 6:55 am tomorrow.

Wow, I love it! Why didn’t I ever get a fabulously talented student like your daughter in MY kindergarten class! I love the fabric too, my daughter would seriously go ape crazy over it as she’s in a huge puppy kick.

I hope you don’t mind but I am going to add a link to this post in my Friday post on Teacher’s Gifts that I am working on for my other blog ABC & 123: A Learning Cooperative: http://abcand123learning.blogspot.com/ It’ll include a picture of the quilt, a short description, and direct link back to this post. Please let me know if it is NOT permissible to share this fun project with our readers. Come on by and see what we’re all about, we’ve got a giveaway going on there too so come on by and enter!
