Today Giggles and I went to Kohls and TJMaxx. I wanted to get some Pjs for Pookie and look for some new jeans for myself. Let me tell you, shopping with Giggles is quite an adventure.
First, she talks non-stop. She points out things she thinks are interesting. She points out things that are not even there, like Elmo and her BFF, who we call EE. She says Hello to other shoppers. She tells them “This is my Mama.”
She will ride in a cart, but she leans out to touch everything. In fact, she prefers if you park the cart right in front of a display, so that she can peruse the shelves. Then, when she knocks something off, she needs you to pick it up right away. Right away.
If you let her out of the cart, she will pick up anything with a handle and carry it around the store. Purses, hangers, mini nail polishes in a cute caddy. Anything.
While she is out of the cart, she usually decides to play a game that is probably called “Pretty Baby, Miss me!” In this game, she hides in the clothing racks and yells “Miss me, Mama! Miss me!” And you are supposed to say “Pretty Baby, where are you? Come here, I miss you!” Then she jumps out laughing saying ” I found you!”
If you are still willing to let her out of the cart, she will try to touch pretty, breakable things. And when you tell her “No” she will offer a really good excuse, like “It a horse Mama.” Which is hard to argue with, since its true and it did look pettable, although porcelain.
If you leave her in the cart, she demands something to hang on the handle of the cart. It has to be on a hanger, and she prefers to have at least 3 things to hang on the handle. She likes to space them out and arrange them. Then when they fall to the floor, as they always do, she will yell “Ah! Hang it here! Hang it here!”
She thinks bras and underwear are swimming suits and likes to look at them because they remind her of the Swimming Pool and how much she likes to go there on Thursday mornings. She also likes to talk about them. Sometimes she tries to put them on.
If she sees a water fountain, she must have a drink. If you refuse, she will ask again, clarifying that she needs a drink in her mouth, in her mouth. If you refuse again, she will dramatically flop over the edge of the cart as if she is trying to ooze over to the water fountain.
She thinks dressing rooms are bathrooms and enjoys pointing them out and telling you that there are potties in there. Then she will tell you she has to go potty, and you look like the cruel mother when you refuse to let her. So, you have to loudly remind her that she is not even 2 yet and wears diapers, so that all the other shoppers will not think you are refusing to stop shopping and let your chatty 3 year old go to the bathroom.
When she is getting tired of shopping, she starts yelling “Buy it Mama! Buy it!” which means she wants to proceed directly to the registers, pay and go home. But, of course, it sounds like she is a mini shopaholic on a bender.
When you take her into a dressing room, she decides that she should take her clothes off too and looks for something to try on. If you have nothing for her, she will try on one of those swimming suits she grabbed earlier.
But, then she offers this unprovoked comment in the dressing room and you forgive her and promise to take her shopping again tomorrow:
“Mama is pretty. Pretty Mama. Yeah.”
