Pookie had a substitute bus driver this morning. We were interested to see if that made a difference in his behavior. It seems that it did.
The regular bus driver had noted that he seemed to be looking at her after he yelled, like he was waiting for a response. So, she decided to ignore him. (she told me she has been driving Special Ed busses for 13 years, so I think she has her head in the game.) She said the first day it caused him to yell more, but that the was optimistic. She said it was really obvious that he was doing it to make her yell back at him.
Then she was sick today, so we did not get to test her theory. But we got to test a new one. The substitute bus driver did not know his history and was not a member of the “How-Can-We-Get-Pookie-to-Stop-Yelling” Team so she just drove and ignored him.
We did not get a full report yet (it takes a day or so for this info to trickle back to us thru the teacher) but it seems like he yelled alot less today. Apparently he was pretty quiet until the bus was delayed by road construction, then he yelled. But I wonder if he yelled because another boy on the bus got upset. There is a boy who rides Pookie’s bus who is afraid of Construction Equipment and big trucks.
We are also going to try another tactic. Pookie always sits in the front row, kiddy-corner from the driver. We thinkif we make him sit in another seat, one that he cannot see the driver as well, maybe he will stop trying to yell to get her attention. Its a risky plan. There is a chance that moving him from his seat will actually cause him to be naughty in another way. We are worried that he might unbuckle his seatbelt and move seats while the bus is driving. No one wants a repeat of the last bus debacle.
We also decided that since he is doing it in order to get a response out of us, we will not be discussing it at all. We were talking to him every morning about good bus behavior and reading a Social Story about being quiet on the bus. But if he is just pushing our buttons, then we are done playing into his hand. We won’t be mentioning it at all. Take that Pookie.
We will let you know how this unfolds. Hopefully if we all ignore it and we switch his seat, it will be over soon.
