Glasses for Geetle

by beagoodmom on October 5, 2007

Yesterday I took Geetle to the eye doctor.  She had went 6 months ago and the Dr.  asked us to bring her back to check on a potential issue.  6 months ago, he noticed that she was farsighted, not a big deal for a child her age, almost all kids are.  But she was more far sighted in her right eye than her left.  The difference was “3 steps” ( I must admit I am not entirely sure what that means, but he said 1 or 2 steps was OK, but 3 was a slight issue).  So, we went back yesterday to see if the issue got any better or worse.

Nothing changed in the past 6 months, but the Dr. thought it was time to correct the problem, so that she does not get lazy eye.  Her eye muscles are fine, but if left untreated, she will start using her left eye to compensate for the far-sightedness in her right.

We talked about it when the Dr. left the room for a minute.  I asked her if she knew what the doctor was talking about. She said yes, she was going to wear glasses like Arthur.  We went out to the lobby and the technician helped her pick out a pair of purple Tinkerbell glasses (they have a dot of fairy dust on the temple and I think Tinkerbell is printed on the case).  She will get them in 7-10 days.

How do we feel about this new adventure:

Pros:

  • she is going to look darn cute in her purple glasses
  • she is OK with it and is even a bit excited
  • its no big deal, alot of our family wears glasses
  • she is a very grown-up kid, so I think she will be good at taking care of her glasses.

Cons:

  • we have to help a 4 1/2 year old keep track of her glasses, because she will need some degree of help, no matter what.
  • the first pair was cheap, 90% paid for by our vision insurance.  But the insurance benefit is for glasses once every 24 months.  We are likely to be paying out of pocket for a replacement pair at some time during the next 24 months.
  • she might outgrown her far-sightedness, but since near-sightendness runs in the family, it is likely that she will wear glasses for most of her life, just don’t know when that will start.

Well, either way, she is getting glasses.  We will just wait and see how we all adapt.  On a side note, we have a “no toys at the table” rule at our house.  This includes costumes, funny hats, etc.  Geetle told me she is looking forward to telling Pookie that she gets to wear glasses at the table and that it is allowed.  She told me she is going to tell him “Pookie!  These are not sunglasses, I wear them all day!”
