Pookie-what is he up to?

by beagoodmom on October 9, 2009

Pookie, oh Pookie. How can I sum you up in one little blog post? What did Winston Churchill say…he is like a riddle wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma, but perhaps there is a key. I think that is true.

Pookie’s favorite things right now are building castles out of wooden blocks, driving toy cars around the kitchen and watching “Alvin & the Chipmunks.” He is doing very well in First grade and brings home worksheets every day. They are working on classifications, descriptive words, time, addition and Fall themes. While we know that he sometimes does not want to be at school doing these things, he performs well and follows the rules. Last year he would rip the worksheets or break his pencil as a way to protest. This year, he seems to have figured out that the worksheets are inevitable and he should just muscle thru.

We are so proud of how he can sit down and write out Geetle’s spelling words, with out every having seen them before. Somehow he just seems to know how to do these things; they have been sinking in all along. It reminds us that alot of things are sinking in.

Pookie’s reading voice is getting louder and more confident. His handwriting is still awkward, but his spelling is amazing. When he is naughty recently, its easy to see the “I-am-almost-7-and-I-do-what-I-want” written on his face. Look for it. It says “I-am-almost-7-and-I-do-what-I-want” not “I-have-Autism.” So, in some way we are encouraged by his naughty behavior. It means he is developing on a path. His own path. That path goes thru some naughty naughty territory, but the end seems all right.

While Pookie has had some rough times with Giggles recently, we see that he is also learning to deal with frustration and accept that sometimes people get in your space. He understands the big rules in life. He knows he is not supposed to hurt anyone. We see Giggles touch his arm at dinner and Pookie look at her with a disapproving look, but nothing more. We see him obligingly take a bite when she stuffs a banana under his nose. We see him grab her arm when she takes his toys…grab it and then pause…then let go.
