Has Preschool Done the Kids Any Good?

by beagoodmom on October 17, 2007

Yes!  Geetle has adapted to preschool very well.  She has learned to be interested in what other kids do and want.  She has learned many interesting things about a wide variety of subjects (dinosaurs, gardening, animals, etc)  I don’t expect her to get into college early just because she can pronounce Triceratops, but I am very happy that she likes to learn and is learning “how” to learn.  She has developed some great peer friendships and learned to follow other grown-ups’ rules.  She has become very independent and inquisitive.  She will talk to adults more frequently.  She looks out for the little kids at school and stands up for herself against the (physically) bigger boys.  Her imagination has taken off.  She takes school very seriously and expects to go every day.

Pookie’s progress has also been great.  He is much more verbal than when he started school.  He will ask for things, using complete setences.  We still have to remind him about eye contact, but he remembers more each time.  He is becoming a very even-tempered, patient and compliant boy.  Sure, he has a stubborn streak at times, but no more than any other 4 1/2 year old.  He follows directions and interacts with his world more.  We can toss a casual “Hey, will you put the milk away, please” over our shoulder and he will do it.  He makes up his own games, and does fewer stimming-type motions.  He laughs when Geetle does something funny.  He lets her hang on and follow him around like a train.  He is learning to call other kids and adults by their name.  He likes to see numbers and letters written out and asks us to show him how to spell certain words.  He is learning to be responsible for himself and his space.  He is learning about empathy and handling conflict.

If my kids did not go to school for free (tax dollars at work!) I would say “its worth every penny!”.  But since we do go for free, I will say “its worth every minute I spend waiting for the buses, putting kids on and off the buses, filling out paperwork, rearranging my work schedule, lining up summer school opportunities, and generally obsessing about my little tiny 4 year olds being away from home.”
