Geetle had a friend over after school on Monday. While they played, I *may* have inadvertently used Geetle’s nickname to call her up the stairs. It did not take her friend long to latch on to that one. Not in a mean way….just in an “I am in your inner circle because we are such good friends” sort of way.
I went to school today to volunteer at the Book Fair. At dismissal time, I walked to Geetle’s classroom to give her a ride home. As I passed the friend in the hallway, she whispered to me “I call her (nickname) now.” I whispered back “Well, that is a secret at-home nickname, so you should call her Geetle.”
Soon, another boy said “What is the nickname? Tell me!” I smiled and walked towards Geetle’s desk.
As she and I walked out of the room, the boy said “See you later (nickname).”
Geetle just rolled her eyes and kept on walking, so I am not sure if I am in trouble or not. I’m afraid to ask.
Her nickname is not anything embarrassing. Its not Cuddlebutt or anything. Plus, she really likes those “Stink” books by Megan McDonald…any you know that boy’s real name is not Stink. So, I think she gets that a nickname is OK, and maybe even cool.
I wonder if she will have something to discuss with me tomorrow after school. I knew it would happen eventually. It just slipped out. Thank goodness we don’t call her Cuddlebutt at home. At least her real nickname is cute and could be a person’s real name. To me, it sounds like a 3rd tier character they would introduce on Desperate Housewives for one episode and then forget about. Its very Stepford Wives-Country Club-ish.

D and my Dad both have fairly strange nicknames for me…not really embarrassing, just strange. They’ve both called me weird nicknames in public, and in front of my friends. It was a bigger deal when I was younger, but I think everyone must have some at-home nickname, because I never remember anyone making a big deal about it. I’m sure it will be fine!
