Let the Race Begin!- Flat Geetle and Flat Stanley

by beagoodmom on November 22, 2009

Geetle was excited to get a Flat Stanley book at her Book fair last week. For those of you who have not read it, its the story of an average boy who gets squished by a falling bulletin board, leaving him only a half inch thick! Bad news? Not really, since it means he is flat enough to mail around the world and visit his friends. He also has some interesting adventures, like saving the Great Pyramids from treasure thieves!

Scholastic.com offers ideas for your own Flat Stanley-type adventures. So, Geetle and I decided to cut out Flat Stanley and mail him to a friend, who would mail him to one of their friends, who would mail him to another person, and so on and so on. Along the way, we invite those friends to come to our blog and see what Stanley has been up to and where he has been. We also welcome emails; our Flat Friends may use the Contact button up top of the page.

To liven up the fun even more, we made a Flat Geetle! She and Flat Stanley are racing around the country and we will see who has the most adventures by Valentines Day 2010!

We hope that each person who receives Flat Stanley or Flat Geetle will take the time to email us with a quick hello. We would love to learn about the weather in your town, how big it is, if you have any pets, what your favorite SpongeBob episode is, what your favorite candy bar is, who your town is named after…anything that would be interesting to a curious girl like Geetle. We also hope that Flat Stanley and Flat Geetle get to share a meal or go with you to your favorite park, or maybe to your Grandma’s house or some other place fun. Maybe you and your new Flat Friend will have a great adventure or maybe you will just play a board game. We would love to see a picture of Flat Stanley or Flat Geetle with your family.

To start Flat Geetle off, we sent her to our Cousins, Tman and Baby Belaina just over the border in Wisconsin. Flat Stanley is heading for our closest-farthest relatives, Uncle Ben and Aunt Lisa (By that we mean our closest relatives that live the farthest away) in Colorado. We hope they will send us a note to tell us what kind of fun they had with Flat Stanley and Flat Geetle (did they take Stanley to the grocery store? Did he almost get lost under the pineapple display? Did they take Flat Geetle to a school concert where she sat in the front row? We can’t wait to find out!)

Whoever has Flat Stanley and Flat Geetle on Valentines Day 2010, we ask that you mail him/her back to us at the address on the letter, rather than sending him off to another friend. After 12 weeks of traveling, they will be eager to get back home and recover. We will also want to see who visited more places, Flat Stanley or Flat Geetle!

If you are interested in doing your own Flat Stanley project, we would like to share the letter we enclosed with the paper cutouts of Flat Stanley and Flat Geetle (we laminated everything for durability). Our letter went like this:

Dear Friend,
I just read an exciting book; “Flat Stanley” written by Jeff Brown. In the book, Stanley is flattened by a falling bulletin board and becomes Flat Stanley. While this might sound like bad news, Flat Stanley can now visit his friends by traveling in an envelope! He has some great fun! I have made a Flat Stanley and a Flat Geetle (that’s my internet nickname!) and we are traveling around the country. Inside this envelope you will find either Flat Stanley or Flat Geetle. I hope that you will treat us like a guest. Please take me or Stanley with you when you can and send me an email about our adventures. You can email my Mom at beagoodmom@gmail.com. You can also check her blog at www.beagoodmom.com to see how our adventures are going. You may keep Flat Stanley or Flat Geetle for a week or less. While they are with you, we would love to learn about your city, your family, your hobbies…anything you think might be interesting to a curious kid like me!

After your visit with Flat Stanley or Flat Geetle, please mail him/her to someone you know who would like to be part of our special project. Here are the steps:
1. Receive Flat Stanley or Flat Geetle in the mail.
2. Make Flat Stanley or Flat Geetle part of your family.
3. Send an email/picture to beagoodmom@gmail.com to tell us about your time with Flat Stanley or Flat Geetle.
4. check out www.beagoodmom.com to see what other adventures your flat friend has had.
5. Mail this letter and Flat Stanley/Flat Geetle to a friend of yours who would like to help us in our fun project.

We ask that the family who has Flat Geetle or Flat Stanley on Valentines Day February 14, 2010 please send him back to us at: XXXXX

What a fantastic project. I really hope Flat Stanley and Flat Geetle have great adventures as they travel around and that they get back to you safely in the end.
