On our Thanksgiving travel weekend, we decided to let the big kids watch movies in the car. BAGD recently bought me an Ipod Touch, so now we have 2 in the house…perfect for watching movies during long car trips. We were reluctant to have them holding the Ipods themselves, since we have fished too many Leapster games and eyeglasses out of the crack of the car seat after long car trips. And we wanted to minimize the touching of the buttons, accidental and otherwise. So, I made a solution.
I sewed up a quick pair of pillows, roughly 8 inches by 18 inches. To the front of each, I sewed a rectangle of clear vinyl (available at Walmart, in the fabric aisle). I sewed the vinyl to the front center of the pillow, attaching on at 3 sides, leaving the top open to side the Ipod in the newly made “pocket”. I even remembered to leave an opening on the left hand side of the vinyl rectangle, for the headphone cord to come out! I also stuck a square of adhesive velcro on the top opening, for extra security. For fun, I added a handle to the top of the pillow too. Now the kids could sit in the backseat, with the Ipod pillows on their laps, watching movies all the way to WI and Peoria.
It worked like a charm!
BAGD and I were still a little nervous, so we made the kids sign a contract explaining their responsibilities.

Geetle took it very seriously and followed all the rules. We knew she would. We worried about Pookie because he is that guy who would sign a contract without reading it…just for the free pen. But, at our first stop, he thrust the pillow up thru the seats and waited for me to take it from him before going inside the gas station for a bathroom break. We were very impressed. Geetle ended up watching more movies than Pookie did, but that is because he played Leapster most of the way. She loves TV and will tell you that she does not get enough of it around here. So, hearing that she could watch movies in the car was like a dream come true. She was not about to miss it, or do anything to mess it up. Geetle watched Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, an episode of iCarlly, Fetch with Ruff Ruffman, Martha Speaks, Sponge Bob, Super Friends, Garfield the Movie and Phineas and Ferb. All available on iTunes, which we had shopped and downloaded as part of our weekend prep.
Speaking of iTunes, if you head over there now, there is a free 30minute episode of WordWorld available. Also, the Sesame Street podcast gives fairly long video clips, just the right length to give Giggles a cheap thrill while we wait for the man to change the oil in the car (keeps her from falling in that big hole in the floor they have at Jiffy Lube.) Also check out the “free” movie section which has a 4 minute podcast (“iTunes Movie Featurette”) of Scrat, that squirrel from Ice Age, trying to hide a new nut he found. Cute.
