That’s why you come here, right? So, here are a few books I have read recently and my thoughts.
Dear John by Nicholas Sparks. I found this at Goodwill for $.59. Its a good book, worth more than $.59. It reminded me of my early days with BAGD. The characters meet while “John” is home on leave from the Marines. Its a good story, unpredictable ending. My only complaint is that I DO NOT like being tricked into reading books about ASD. You have heard me say that before and its still true. Out of nowhere this book throws in a sub-plot about ASD. It was done very well and had a fine ending, but I don’t watch/read things about ASD. Its a rule I have. But, still I liked the book. But still, I keep the rule.
Given my success with that Nicholas Sparks book, I found another one at Goodwill. The Lucky One, also by Nicholas Sparks. I liked this one too. Its a contemporary love story, a light read. The main character is an odd sort, he walks cross country to find a woman he saw in a photo he found in Fallujah. In books, people like that always end up to be the introspective salt-of-the-earth type. In real life they are crazies. But, why read books if you want reality…right?
Theennnnnn…I had BAGD pay full price for a Nicholas Sparks book for me at Borders. He called me the other day to say that he was just walking out of the dentist’s office and would be home soon (yes, there is a connection here, just stay with me). Since I assumed that he had parked at Borders even though its quicker to park at Sears Auto when visiting our dentist at the Mall, I knew he had to walk thru the books to get out of the building. Sure enough, I was right; I know that guy like the back of my hand. So, I told him any Nicholas Sparks book other than the 2 above and the Notebook (which I had seen as a Movie a long time ago). He came home with The Choice.
Of the 3, I think I liked this one the best. I was completely surprised by the ending, which almost never happens. (that might be because I sometimes peek, but we won’t talk about that.) I was even fooled by the title! Oh Nicholas Sparks! You led me down the wrong path! Its almost like you did it on purspose. I guess what I have learned is that Nicholas Sparks books ALWAYS have a surprise ending and its best not to try and figure it out (and certainly, don’t peak!).
BAGD teases me that the fiction books I read must be full of, as he puts it, “blah blah blah heaving bosom, blah blah blah pantaloons asunder.” That’s his joke, because I usually don’t read fiction at all. But when I do, I like chick-lit. I keep telling him that these Nicholas Sparks books don’t have any torn pantaloons or heaving bosoms, but he doesn’t believe me. If they did, I certainly wouldn’t be talking about them on my parenting blog…sheesh! Anyway, I recommend these books (and probably any Nicholas Sparks books, given the odds).
And on a cheap note…since he is so popular, I bet you can find some of his books at Goodwill for $.59! Sorry about that, Mr. Sparks. But at least you are getting those movie royalties…right?

Do you think the “Dear John” book is worth seeing as a movie? When D and I went to see “New Moon” (ohhhh yeahhhh) the other night we saw a preview for it and thought it looked really good….but we think every movie looks good when we see it in preview form….you could probably trick us into watching “Ishtar” if you showed us a trailer.
And if you like chick-lit, you should read “Summer Sisters” by Judy Blume if you haven’t already, because it is amazing.
I just saw a copy of Summer Sisters at Goodwill and did not pick it up! Maybe it will be there when I go back next time. I looked at it once a Borders and almost bought it. Should have definately picked it up for $.59 at Goodwill. What was I thinking!
I didn’t know Dear John was going to be made into a movie. I think it would make a good movie. In the movies people like a good twisty ending. There were some good characters; they are all very likeable. I am going to go Google it and see who is in it. I bet they got a real looker to play John.
