Decorating the tree and Silly Faces

by beagoodmom on December 14, 2009

On Friday night we went to Mamaw/Papaw’s to help decorate their Christmas Tree. When we pulled in the driveway, Geetle saw the tree lit up in the front window and said “Oh man! They already did it without us!” We laughed, because we knew that the lights were on, but no ornaments. She was pretty excited when she walked in and saw that there was still work to do.

As you may have read here before, Pookie, Geetle and (now Giggles) love to decorate Christmas trees. Its one of those things you would expect Geetle to like, but not Pookie. Yet, they both look forward to it and do it well. When we were decorating the tree, Papaw reminded us of how Pookie loved it so much last year that when no one was looking, he put a foot tall Santa Claus doll and a 2 foot tall wooden sled in the tree as ornaments.

This is a long story, but stick with me……..Last year at Christmas, Mamaw got Pookie a game called Silly Faces Game
that is sort of a go-fish sort of game. You are supposed to spin the spinner and collect all the pieces you need to make a funny face. Great game, I am sure. We never played it. Instead, unbeknownst to Mamaw, this game had been shown in a Baby Einstein video…and we all know how much Pookie loved those videos. Those videos really gave him his first taste of pretend play, since he would act out the things he had seen on the videos. So, as soon as he got the game, he started building Silly Faces like had been shown in the video. Once something becomes a stim for Pookie, we can never take it back. Once he had “his” way of playing the game, we could never play it any other way. But, that’s fine. We have stopped trying to squash the stims. we let him work thru them, and he always does. He played Silly Faces for months, until he lost the box and some of the necessary pieces. Then it was over. But he never forgot that magic Christmas Day 2008 at Mamaw’s house when he got it as a present.

For the last few months, we had noticed that Pookie was looking thru my photo albums alot. Several times a week, he would drag them out and look thru them. BAGD finally realized that he was looking at photos from Christmas 2008 and lingering over the ones of him opening presents at Mamaw/Papaw’s. Sure enough, there was a picture of him opening the Silly faces game. He looked at that picture every day for weeks. It became clear that he was gearing up for Christmas 2009 and really wanted another Silly Faces game. Sure enough, as the weeks passed, he started to ask about it. Everytime we went to Mamaw’s house he would ask her about it too. So, when we showed up to decorate the tree on Friday, we think he believed it was finally the day he would get his 2009 Silly Faces game. He looked under the tree, he asked Mamaw, he looked in the back bedroom. But, there were no presents to open that night. He was disappointed, but handled it well and started to decorate the tree. Wait until he finds out it is under Mamaw’s tree for Christmas Day!
