I have decided to do as much of our Christmas shopping online as I can. I have lots of reasons: the selection is better, its easier, no traffic, etc. But today I found the best reason.
Since the baby was born, find that I need some longer shirts. Most things fit OK, but I feel like all my shirts are too short. So, I went to Kohls and Target to get a few new ones today. While paying for my new shirts, I found the #1 reason to shop on line for Christmas. It will keep me from blowing my stack at some rude clerk.
Why can’t clerks seem to remember what their job is? Why do they forget that they are supposed to *look* at the customer, say hello, tell them the sales total and then say thank you? Seriously. Today at Kohls, the clerk did not even acknowledge me, because he and the bagger (since when do they need baggers at Kohls?) and the clerk at the next register were talking about some “girl from NY” who made a scene at the store earlier. At Target, the clerk picked up the red phone and called the desk for quarters and dollar bills for her drawer….while she was ringing up my purchase and finishing the sale. Did I mention that I was paying by debit card, so those quarters were obviously not for me?!
If you cannot handle the intense customer contact involved in being a retail clerk…then don’t do it. Pick a different career field. If you choose to be a clerk, then do it right.
I am done standing there silently while a clerk ignores me. Next time it happens, I am going to politely request that they devote their attention to me until we finish the sale. While I am at it, let me make another promise. I am no longer willing to let the yellow-shirted security dweebs at Best Buy inspect my receipt as I leave the store. Your security check point is 6 feet from the register. If you are that worried about your clerks undercharging people on purpose, Best Buy, then watch them, not me.
And I don’t want to hear how rough it is to be a clerk; that dealing with the public is so hard. If you were nicer to the public, they would be nicer to you. And even if they are rude…so what. Are you working there because its fun or because they pay you? If its because they pay you…then shut up and do your job, regardless of how rude the customers are. My job is tough too, but I am still nice to every single jerk and crackpot.

And the other side of the coin, those customers who do not get off their cell phones in order to acknowledge the clerk who is taking care of them. The street runs both ways, so neither side should be rude. I was recently at new restaurant opening, the gentleman behind counter asked me how I was doing, I told him “just great, and how are you?” His comment, “fine and thanks for asking.” Made me wonder, was I the only one who asked? During the upcoming holiday season, my suggestion would be let the store managers know not only about the bad service you receive but also the good service you receive. It works for me, I have even received extra added gifts when buying because I let the manager know what good service I received. Keep up the good work bagm.
