Fun with Shaving Cream

by beagoodmom on June 13, 2007

Today, after we made pizzas for lunch, I wiped down the counter with a wet rag. Both kids then began to “write” on the slick surface with their fingers. I remembered that my mom told me that at the end of the school year, she used to have her 1st graders wash the tops of their desks off with shaving cream. She would pile some old-fashioned white shaving foam on each desk, smooth it out, and tell the kids to practice their letters and numbers by writing in the foam with their fingers. When they were done, she wiped off the foam and the desks were spotless, all the pencil marks and scuffs were gone.

I had some shaving cream handy, in our art cabinet (did I ever tell you how to make your own 3-D puffy paint with shaving cream, tempera paint and Elmers glue?), so we tried it on the kitchen counter. It worked pretty well, except that our counter tops are white as well and it did not show up as well as we hoped. But the kids definitely thought it was fun.

Ironically, although the texture and tactile experience was great for Pookie, it might not have been the ideal game for an ASD-child who does some “flipping” when he is excited. (flipping= waving hands back and forth in the air, quickly). I did have to wipe some foam off the curtains. But it cleaned up OK and now our kitchen has a delightful menthol smell.

More importantly, the kids had fun.

Great activity I love using shaving cream especially the nice smelly ones like the mint one. We like to add glitter or cereal at the end to make shapes…..although the clean up is terrible they love it. :)

Wow- that looks like lots of fun! My son would have a big time and would make a big mess too! But, I guess it would be worth it. Hey – if you have a chance you might check out my site FreeStuff4Kids. Lots of free stuff there to keep the kiddos entertained!
Thanks for the idea!
