Does he get it? Does it matter?

Pookie and Geetle turn 9 on Tuesday. Geetle is all over it. She has been waiting for Birthday cards in the mail for weeks. She had told me what she wants for Breakfast on Tuesday and picked out cookies to take to her school friends that day. She has told me how and when she wants her presents…presented.

But what about Pookie? We tell him that his birthday is coming up soon, but he doesn’t really seem to care. He got a birthday card in the mail today and refused to even open it. Geetle got him a bag of cookies to take to school too, but we can’t show him or he will want to eat them! I made him a chart to count down to his birthday and he was more interested in talking about the Trampoline birthday party he attended for a classmate last week.

To further confuse the poor boy, his birthday is 1/31. We are having birthday lunch with one side of the family on 1/28, and lunch with the other side of the family on 1/29. Finally, we are having the party with the school friends on 2/4. While a week of non-stop Birthday Fun sounds great to Geetle, I think it makes poor Pookie even more confused.

Well, maybe he is not “confused”…per se. He is just sort of “whatever” about it. Its really ironic. The AUT in AUTISM means “self”. People with Autism are self-centered, plain and simple. Not in a mean way. Just in a “I am the center of my universe” way. They have a hard time relating to and understanding the world outside themselves. While that may make it sound like Pookie would be overjoyed to celebrate his own birthday, its not true in this case!

Just another riddle, brought to you by Autism, and Pookie.
