Pookie’s sisters picked out some very thoughtful Birthday gifts for him. Geetle got him a Snoopy doll that plays the Peanuts theme song. When she saw it she said “Oh Boy! He needs this! To go with his Charlie Brown one!” She knows him. She knows he likes things that go together and is always seeking to organize and bring matching sets of things together. So, its true, if he has a Charlie Brown doll, he is going to need a Snoopy…and a Woodstock someday!
Giggles got him a great one too, and it led to a very cute moment tonight. First a little back story.
I took Giggles to Target to pick out presents for the twins. I asked her what she was getting them and she knew exactly what she wanted. She said she was getting Geetle an Alien Conquest Lego set and Pookie something Toy Story (his favorite). After we picked out the Lego set, I headed towards the Toy Story section, moving sort of quickly. Giggles was lagging behind and suddenly I hear her yell “This! This! I am going to get him this!”
I turn around and see her lugging a GIANT box down the aisle, grinning from ear to ear. I ask her what it is. She says “Its for the bathtub. Its Hot Wheels for the bathtub. He can play it in the BATH TUB!” Sure enough, that’s what it was…so I let her get it. She was super excited.
Giggles gave him the present on Saturday and he barely looked at it. I know she didn’t notice, but I did. It made me sort of sad, but I figured it was one of those things she would have to get used to, as his sister. He is a loose cannon. Someday I will sit down with her, just as I have with Geetle and explain to her that he is different, and that he does not mean to be difficult, but he sometimes is.
After Saturday’s party, I put the new toys in his bedroom. Just a pile in the corner.
Fast-forward to Sunday night.
We got home from Wisconsin and had a quick snack before I sent the kids upstairs to take showers and get ready for bed. The girls were still eating their yogurts, so I told Pookie to go upstairs and go first. I was busy cleaning up the kitchen, and Pookie will not turn the shower on by himself (afraid of getting burned by hot water) so I told him to take a bath. He hesitated, so I said “push the drain in, turn on the warm water and then get in.” He stared at me for a second, but then went up stairs.
A few minutes later I hear him at the top of the stairs doing his ineffective requests for help. (he uses incorrect syntax and says things like “Mom, can I help you” or “Do you need help” when he is actually ASKING for help.) I figured this was related to the hot water thing again, so I yelled that I would be up in a minute to turn the water on for him.
I wiped my hands and headed down the kitchen hall. As I turned and got to the bottom of the stairs I looked up and saw him at the top. Completely naked, clutching his Hot Wheels bath tub set to his chest. “Mom, can I help you?” he asked again.
I smiled and said “Yes, Pookie, I can help you.”
So I ran the tub and sat on the bathroom floor trying to snap his plastic toy together before the tub overflowed. As soon as I got it assembled, he grabbed it and dove into the tub. And he had a blast playing with it.
That is the part that Giggles saw tonight. She noticed that part, and she was nearly as happy as he was.
