On your mark, get set, behave!

Every day I learn something new, and I am amazed that I never thought of it before. Recently, I had a good one.

We attend Library Storytime on Tuesday mornings. Its about 45 minutes long; its a whole event. Puppet Show, story, finger play, 2 or 3 songs, a short cartoon, etc. We sit on the floor in a large group. There is alot of up and down; the librarian aks the kids to join her in the movement songs. Geetle and Pookie love it. Its a Summer series, so it has a theme. The songs repeat from week to week and they both have learned them by heart. The problem is, when Pookie stands up to do the songs and movements, he invariably drifts a bit to the side. Before we know it, he has joined some other family. When its time to sit back down, he sits, no matter where he is, no matter which family he is with. Thats generally fine, except I do not want him to get too far away or obstruct someone else’s view, step on their fingers, etc.

So, I decided to give him a mark.

We lay out anything….Giggles’ blanket, a coloring page from the kids area, etc. I tell him that is his mark. Sit on your mark. Stand on your mark. And he does. Such a simple thing, but what a difference it makes. He does not mean to drift away, he just gets caught up in the songs/movements and it happens. Now, when the song is over, he looks down, finds his mark and stands squarely on it.

Problem solved. 49% Mom, 51% Pookie. Same as usual.
