Remember when I told you that I had 8 canisters of table salt in my basement that I did not know what to do with? Of course you do. Well, I was thumbing through a kids art project book (I would run upstairs and find out the name and link it here, except that I think its about 25 years old… and second-string quality at best….so I doubt you will ever buy it) and I found a cute project that called for a salt canister! Perfect! I can get rid of these boxes and not feel like I just threw them away. We would make them into piggy banks!
We decided to try it out on Thursday, when our friends EB and CB were here (that’s an extra two boxes!). First we had to empty out the salt and paint the boxes pink.
After they dried, I cut holes in for the legs (wooden dowels) and the snout (a cork from Menards). We dipped the dowels in glue and then pushed them into the holes I had cut for the legs. The cork hole was slightly smaller than the cork and gives a way to get your money out. Finally, a slit in the top of the bank. Then the kids glued on ears and tails and drew on the faces. 4 very cute pigs.
They all really liked this project. And now I am down to just 4 salt boxes in the basement!
BY the way, I was going to make something out of the actual salt, so I saved it in a big bowl on the counter. But then (24 hours later) I got frustrated with looking at it all the time and just threw it away. Go figure. I am so weird. I save this salt for over a year, just to find a reason to use it, but then when I do….I end up throwing the salt away.

These are sooo cute! I haven’t done a arts/craft project with my guys in awhile. We used to make bats for halloween out of toilet paper tubes. Painted then black, cut out black wings from construction paper, painted on eyes and such and hung them up with fishing line.

These are really cute. Will you be using them as “piggy” banks? My kids would love this.
