Wow. There sure is a lot of stuff on etsy.com. I just bought a necklace for a bridal shower gift. I had many many dozen choices. Lots. But I finally made my decision. I spent way too much time doing that tonite. I had planned on sewing, but it did not work out that way. Oh well.
Lets see….what is new here? I need to write up our trip to Cincinnati. I need to post some really cute pictures, so I will have to find time for that this weekend.
Pookie made an important developmental step tonite. He learned how to weigh the consequences and see if the naughty behavior is worth a trip to the naughty chair. His decision? Yes. Launching yourself off the arm of the couch, 4 feet into the air, and landing on a pile of cushions is SOOOOOO worth 5 minutes on the naughty chair. He did it 3 times, pleading ignorance each time. He served his setence and then returned to the couch area. He would say to me “You need to jump on your couch.” (which means “I” need to jump on “my” couch….he has trouble with pronouns). I said no, he (nor I) needed to do that. He would walk away, seemingly forgetting about the discussion and then 10 minutes later jump off the arm again. I never caught him in the act. So, I would hear the landing and send him back to the naughty chair. The last time he did it, the time I think he truly became a 5 year old boy, I saw him lining up his jump and I aimed my Motherly Pointer Finger right at him and said “If you jump on the couch, you will sit on the naughty chair.” We made and held eye contact. He hesitated 5 seconds, maintaining eye contact the whole time. Then he jumped. Then he ran to the naughty chair. SOOOOO worth it.
Geetle continues to amaze us with her reading. She will blurt out things like “Hey Mom, these crackers have CHEESE BAKED RIGHT IN.” Which she obviously read off the front of the box. When she wakes up in the morning, she lays in bed for 30-60 minutes “reading” books. I used to think “how cute, she looks at the pictures” but now I think she is actually reading them. Its unnerving, when you are used to your kid being an illiterate and all. Pookie is doing alot of the same things. He will copy the titles of books and write them on blank pieces of paper. He will also sound out words as he reads, our favorite recently was his interpretation of the sign in front of the Chiquita (Banana) Corporate Center in Cincinnati. Chiquita…thats pronounced “Cha quiet” in case you wondered.
Giggles is officially a crawler. Her form is a bit shakey, but she has ambition. She covers feet upon feet in a day. She will crawl to some forbidden object, snatch it, and then retreat in a backwards crawl, back to her lair where she can chew on it in private. She also gets VERY upset if you take anything away from her. This comes up alot, believe it or not. Today I confiscated a marble, a half sheet of newsprint, a grilled chicken breast and a yard of Stitch Witchery fusible web from her.
BAGD has been sporting an eye patch for the past week and I was just named first chair Harp in the city symphony. Ok, not really, but I don’t have anything interesting to say about us. We are just the boring parents of 3 interesting kids. But we blog, that is ineresting, right?

Thanks for the update! I feel so out of touch! Someday I’ll finish my classroom and get to see real people again! Until then…keep these updates coming! I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE the one about Pookie! I’m sure that you wanted to laugh out loud when he jumped while maintaining eye contact! LOL! Those kids just crack me up! Hope to see you all soon!

Any theories explaining this? My perception is that the typical five year old isn’t quite as self-directed as you describe, but I could be wrong (I was either lazy as a kid or the onset of senility means any memories I might have of doing something similar are long gone).
So is the drive to read just part of the personalities they were born with? Or does the cutthroat race to win admission to Harvard start in kindergarten these days? Or is it something as simple as Swiper the Fox always tries to trick Dora the Explorer and Boots into forgetting to read a story every day?
